POW Tutorial 1
Introduction to Chunking

Lists

This type of chunking is the listing of lexical entities, where prosody makes clear where an entity begins and ends. In a list of numbers, '40' can be one number and '8' another, or there can be one number '48'. In the exercises, you will first be asked to say whether the utterances sound the same or different, and then to distinguish the meanings to say whether entities are run together or not.

Exercise 1 Each item consists of a pair of utterances. Choose same if you think the utterances in the pair sound exactly the same, or different if you hear any difference at all.

  3. same different
