In this paper, we explore a certain variant of discontinuous NPs in German, the splitting of PPs from NPs. The phenomenon is a challenge for a syntactic theory, because the possibility of splitting the PP from the NP does not only depend on certain syntactic configurations, but also on the lexical material involved. This paper thus pursues two aims: Firstly, finding an appropriate syntactic analysis and secondly, capturing the lexical-semantic factors influencing the construction.
