Project description
All implemented TAG (Tree Adjoining Grammar) fragments existing so far either concern langugages that are known to be less problematic for TAG than languages with so-called free word order. Or they comprise only a part of the grammar that does not cover all possible word orders. Furthermore, all previous TAG implementations concentrate on syntax. The design of a TAG-based grammar fragment of German that accounts for both syntax and semantics is therefore an interesting challenge. In preparatory work for this project a syntax-semantics interface for TAG has been formalized. Within this framework, several semantic phenomena have been analyzed. Furthermore, a polynomial TAG variant has been developed that allows to cover a considerably large part of the problematic German data. The aim of the project is to bring together these results, and to design a grammar fragment for German while using the developed TAG variant. The main focus is on the interface of syntax and semantics, and the project's contribution comprises theoretical work as well as an implementation. For obtaining a compact grammar representation, we plan to use a meta-grammar. In addition, a parser needs to be developed for the chosen grammar formalism. Both, meta-grammar and parser, must take into account not only syntactic structure but also semantic representations. |
