We explore linguistic characteristics that are predictive of the proficiency level of a learner text in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Based on the MERLIN corpus, we developed an automatic classification approach, which provides an experimental testbed for an empirical characterization of the CEFR and to the best of our knowledge is the first proficiency classifier for German.
